A SCHOOL in Nelson Mandela Bay is concerned about illegal dumping right outside the school premises.
Mnqophiso Primary School in Zwide has now been turned into a dumping ground.
The school has demanded intervention from the metro.
Principal Luvuyo Booi described this as a nightmare.
“The illegal dumping site outside the school premises is posing a serious health risk to pupils and staff.
“It’s difficult to use our entrance and pavement due to heaps of rubbish.
“This has been happening long before I arrived at the school in 2019.
“It’s difficult for our 274 pupils to deal with the unbearable smell of dead animals and used nappies,” he said.
Booi said although the municipality collects rubbish every week, dumped rubbish reappears after the clean-ups.

“It’s imperative that the municipality implements a permanent solution to this problem.
“It is unacceptable that pupils are forced to study in a filthy environment. We are not blaming the municipality for this mess, but we blame residents who do not take pride in their school. People who are dumping rubbish in our school are community members. It’s also high time the community stands up and protects schools,” said Booi.
Concerned resident Nomathamsanqa Nyuluku said: “In the past, we stopped people from dumping illegally, but this practice persists. They tell us we are not a municipality and that we must mind our own business. As a result, the rubbish has become a breeding ground for rats and flies.”
Daily Sun sent queries but the municipality had not responded by the time of printing.
