Eastern Cape cops have launched a manhunt for eight suspects for the alleged murder of a businessperson and four other people.

The suspects are said to be on the run after the brutal attack on the five victims on Friday afternoon, 9 June on the N2 national road, near Tsolo junction.

Eastern Cape police spokesperson, Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana, said they have registered murder and armed robbery cases.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that two vehicles, a Mercedes Benz and Toyota double cab, were driving on the N2 national road towards Qumbu direction when about eight gun-wielding suspects appeared and started firing gunshots to the occupants of the two vehicles.

“During the incident, three deceased believed to be bodyguards who were escorting the driver of the Mercedes Benz were disarmed by the suspects and all their firearms and cellphones taken away. Both the driver of the Mercedes Benz together with his passenger described as his brother, allegedly died at the crime scene.

“The unidentified suspects allegedly escaped in their vehicles, a double cab Ford Ranger and single cab Toyota bakkie towards the direction of Qumbu. The circumstances which led to the shooting are currently under investigation. Police have registered five murder cases and armed robbery. No arrest made at this stage,” he said.

The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene said he was shocked by the brutal killing of the five people.

“This is nothing but an act of brutality by heartless criminals who have no regard for human lives. I can assure everyone, the suspects can run but they will be found and made to account for their deadly activities,” he said.
