A 41-year-old woman in Limpopo gave birth to a set of conjoined twins at Jane Furse Hospital in the Sekhukhune district on Thursday.

The babies were believed to be the first conjoined twins in Limpopo, but the authorities were yet to confirm this by late on Thursday. (7 April 2022)

Limpopo health department spokesperson Neil Shikwambana said the twins were joined at the chest and abdomen.

He said the mother was referred from a local clinic and was found to be having a normal twin pregnancy during antenatal visits.

The delivery at the hospital was through Caesarean section.

"[I]t was only during [the] operation that doctors discovered that the babies were joined at the chest and abdomen."

Shikwambana said “The babies were successfully extracted without any difficulties and transferred to Mankweng Hospital for full and further assessment, both by neonatologists and pediatric surgeons.

He described the mother's condition as "well", but she would undergo further assessment by gynaecologists.

He said further information will be released after a visit by Limpopo Health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba on Friday.
