AS he believes that Ga-Sekgopo Village outside Modjadjiskloof in Limpopo is covered by a dark cloud, Matsorwane Sekgopo decided to ask for divine intervention.
Through the Matsorwane Sekgopo Foundation, the 51-year-old held a mass prayer at Zebras Football Ground on Sunday, 29 October to pray for the village.
Pastors, izangoma and scores of villagers gathered to seek God’s intervention. The prayer comes as most of the youth are losing their lives through car accidents, suicide and murder. They also prayed for grade 12 pupils who are set to start their final exams on Monday, 30 October.
Matsorwane told Daily Sun they are tired of witnessing strange things in the village.
“Villagers, especially the youth, are dying in numbers. The R81 road is also killing us. Pupils are being attacked by evil spirits in schools and are constantly collapsing. Crime is high. Women are being raped and children are abusing alcohol and drugs,” he said.
He said they were praying to put an end to all of this. “We haven’t received rain in a long time and villagers are starving. We are now asking God to have mercy upon us and forgive us our sins so that things can go back to normal,” he said.
Villagers sang songs of praise, praised God and also prayed for peace.
Pastor Mookamedi Makhubele said they are putting a stop to evil spirits that disturb pupils from studying.

“This is a crucial time for our pupils. We are blocking all the evil so that our pupils can study and write their exams freely and this mass prayer is very important,” he said.
Pastor Johannes Masinamela said alcohol abuse is destroying the youth. “Alcohol is not a problem, the problem is your behaviour when you are drunk. We pray that God can show our youth the right path,” he said.
Community representative, Harry Makoti said they believe prayer will help. “Only prayer can end our village's problems and we believe God heard us,” he said.
