LIMPOPO Transport and Community Safety MEC is not backing down.

This comes after 15 drunk drivers were arrested in the Sekhukhune and Vhembe districts on Thursday, 14 December.

Seven drivers were arrested for drink driving during a traffic enforcement operation in Motetema outside Groblersdal in the Sekhukhune district.

Eight other drunk drivers were arrested for the same offence in Tshaulu outside Thohoyandou in the Vhembe district.

The 15 male drivers are expected to appear before various courts on Monday, 18 December, for drink driving.

This makes a total of 84 drivers arrested for drink driving between Friday, 1 December and Thursday, 14 December.

Department spokeswoman Tidimalo Chuene said that since the beginning of December, five drunk drivers were arrested in Capricorn, 19 in Mopani, 19 in Sekhukhune, 28 in Vhembe and 13 in Waterberg districts.

The arrests came after MEC Radzilani declared war on motorists driving under the influence of alcohol at the opening of the festive season in the province on Thursday, 30 November.

She promised that there would be a crackdown on those who drive under the influence of alcohol as this is one of the top 5 factors that contribute to most of the carnage on Limpopo roads and affect drivers’ ability to make certain decisions.

"Traffic police officers remain on duty at critical points across the province to crack down on all forms of traffic offences and have clear instructions to arrest motorists driving under the influence of alcohol and reckless speeders," Radzilani said.

Motorists are therefore urged to follow the traffic rules to stay safe on the road during the festive season.
