Kulani Shirinda, who went missing in Joburg on Saturday, 26 August 2023.

IT'S been almost two months since Kulani Shirinda (22) from Limpopo went missing in Gauteng and to this day, his family hasn't found him.

Kulani's sister, Valeri Mavanyisi, expressed her frustration with the lack of progress.

“It's been almost two months now. Police have not found him, and we don't have any updates on what is going on. They always tell us that they have nothing. Truly, they're failing us,” Valeri told Daily Sun on Friday 20, October

The Central Joburg TVET College student disappeared on Saturday afternoon, 26 August after he had allegedly gone out with his friends and never returned.

At the time of this unfortunate incident, Kulani was staying and studying in Joburg.

Desperate for answers, Valeri said the family decided to consult several prophets.

“We've gone to prophets and churches, and they're all telling us the same thing, ‘he will come back home’. Nobody is telling us when this will be or where he is. We keep hoping he will show up out of nowhere, but that hasn't happened. Two months is a long time, and his phone is still off, but we haven't given up. We know he is alive because all the prophets are telling us that he is and he will be back,” Valeri told the Daily Sun.

Gauteng has been plagued by kidnapping cases, with a multidisciplinary team led by the Anti-Kidnapping Task Team rescuing an 18-year-old Wits University student in September 2023.

Police Minister Bheki Cele revealed that a syndicate had targeted the LGBTQI+ community through a dating app and had been involved in more than 50 kidnappings, making ransom demands.

Cops have tackled the syndicate, and Cele attributed this success in cracking down kidnapping syndicates where "criminal" cops are sometimes found involved, to the change in management of the crime intelligence unit.

National coordinator of Missing Children SA, Bianca van Aswegen, raised concerns about the rising number of kidnapping cases, primarily driven by financial motives.

She urged communities, parents, and schools to be vigilant and share information to support law enforcement in solving these cases.
