SATURDAY, 10 June started out as a chilled day for students at the University of Zululand but soon turned into a nightmare when one of them was allegedly stabbed to death by his peer.

It's alleged that the victim was stabbed over R70 skoloto.

The 22-year-old allegedly went to the student tuck shop on campus to buy some cigarettes. But before he could buy, a student apparently approached him to ask about the money he owed him.

A fight broke out between the two and the student drew a knife and allegedly stabbed the victim, who died instantly.

A witness (23) said everyone was shocked because they heard that the victim owed the other student R70.

“No one thought the fight could end deadly because it was just a small amount of money he owed the other student. The day went from being a chilled day to being the worst nightmare for all of us who saw the body on the ground. We commend the cops for responding immediately and removing the perpetrator from campus,” said the witness.

SRC secretary Mpiliso Khulani said they were shocked when they heard about the incident, especially as it happened during exams and it might be a distraction to other students.

“It's sad that one of us was killed by another student. We are appealing to students to seek counselling especially those who witnessed the incident so that they can finish their exams,” said Khulani.

University spokeswoman Gcina Nhleko-Mdluli said the university is still reeling in shock.

“It is regrettable that while every reasonable measure is taken to provide a safe environment for students, isolated incidents tragically occur beyond the university’s control” said Nhleko-Mdluli.

She said out of respect for the family of the deceased, the university will not disclose any personal information.

“A criminal case has been registered with SAPS and the perpetrator has been taken into custody. Since an investigation is pending, the university will not comment further on the incident,” she said.

Police spokesman Colonel Robert Netshuinda said Mthunzini police are investigating a case of murder.
