THE brutal murder of a local cop at Phathane Village in Mfolozi, northern KZN left villagers shocked.

What made matters was when the wife of the cop was arrested for allegedly hiring an inkabi to kill her husband.

Nkosinathi Ntinga’s body was found at Umsunduze riverbank with multiple gunshot wounds earlier this month, and his wife is a suspect in this matter.

For this reason, the women of this village decided to turn their annual women’s celebration into prayer day on Friday, 25 August.

They gathered at Phathane Community Hall to join hands to pray against any form of abuse and for the family of the murdered cop.

Villager gogo Thembi Chonco (70) said as women, they could pray for something to change.

“It's very important that in times like this, we turn to God and ask him to come on board to help us end this before it gets out of hand. We gathered here to pray for all sorts of social ills in this village,” she said.

Another villager, Gladys Mthethwa (54), said what happened was painful to every woman who gave birth to a child.

“These trying times. We need to cry to the Lord to intervene because today it might be in that family, but tomorrow it might be one of us. We need to pray for every family in this village because we are facing problems in our homes,” said Gladys.

Ward Councillor Nhlakanipho Chonco hoped the prayer would ease the pain of the affected families.

“We believe that your prayer will go a long way. Without you, we are nothing. You gave birth to all sorts of people in different professions. We believe that you are the solution to many problems faced by this country,” said Chonco.

Mfolozi Mayor Xolani Bhengu, who was also present, applauded the ward councillor for organising this prayer.
