ANOTHER tragedy struck residents of the Mtubatuba area in northern KZN just when they were picking up the pieces after a heavy storm left the area destroyed.
On Wednesday, 25 October, two young boys drowned at a local dam in Hlanganani village while playing near the dam.
It's alleged that the two friends, Amahle Mngomezulu (10) and Snethemba Mpanza (9), were playing near the dam when they drowned.
It's not clear whether the two friends went to the dam to swim, or they slipped and fell inside.
Amahle’s mkhulu, Daniel Mngomezulu (64), said they don’t know what happened.
“We were called to come as the children have drowned. We can’t comment at the moment until we get all the relevant information. We are still here at the dam waiting for their bodies to be retrieved,” said Mngomezulu.

Mtubatuba Municipality mayor, Mxolisi Mthethwa, rushed to the scene and said this was a tragedy as they are still recovering from the damages of the storm that left the area of Mtubatuba wrecked.
“This happens while we are still assessing the damage that was caused by the storm that attacked the area of Mtubatuba on Saturday night. We pray that their bodies are found,” said Mthethwa.
Accompanying the mayor was the uMkhanyakude District mayor, Sphile Mdaka, who appealed to the villagers to teach children about the danger of swimming or playing next to such dams.
“Families are still traumatised. When we left the scene, the divers started the search for the bodies because we had to rush to other meetings that required us to be there as we are still assessing the damages that were done by the recent storm,” said Mdaka.
Police were at the scene.
