A National Freedom Party (NFP) councillor was shot and killed in her sleep at her home in Nongoma, north of KZN.
Ntombenhle Mchunu was brutally murdered by unknown gunmen in the early hours of Sunday, 30 July.
It is alleged that the councillor who serves at the troubled Nongoma Municipality as an executive committee member died instantly after a group of armed men broke into her house and shot her several times before fleeing the scene.
Mchunu's murder comes three weeks after another NFP councillor, Nonhlanhla Zungu survived two attempts on her life.
While early this month, another ANC councillor, Lindokuhle Ndlovu in the City of uMhlathuze resigned after surviving an assassination.
In the same month the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) lost a councillor, Killer Mkhwanazi who died in a hail of bullets in uMkhanyakude District, northern KZN.
NFP Secretary General, Canaan Mdletshe said they are extremely hurt by the attack.

"It is hitting us badly because the signs have been there. Since the NFP-ANC-EFF block took over the reins in Nongoma, there has been threats made by senior leaders of a certain political party as well as individuals,” said Mdletshe.
He said they are calling on a specialized team of police officers to be deployed in the area so that these killings can be stopped once and for all.
“Nongoma cannot continue to be an area of hooligans and hitmen just because it is feared as such. Police must clean up the area. Drastic measures must be put in place to deal with thugs masquerading as politicians in Nongoma,” said Mdletshe.
Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance in the province is mourning the death of another female councillor who passed away after a short illness.
Pearl Msomi serves as a ward councillor under eThekwini municipality, she passed away in hospital last week.
DA KZN leader, Francois Rodgers praised Msomi for being brave and standing for what she believed in.
“Her dedication to the party and her community, had ensured that the party was able to win ward 9 from the ANC during the 2021 by-elections,” he said.
