A police officer was shot and killed by unknown suspects.

A COP couple was attacked when thugs stormed their house in Phethane Village in KZN on Tuesday, 1 August.

The couple was with an SAPS senior administration clerk who was visiting Warrant Officer Nkosinathi Ntinga.

Ntinga and the clerk were then kidnapped and the clerk was thrown out of the car. He survived, but Ntinga was shot dead.

KZN police spokesman Colonel Robert Netshiunda said Ntinga and his wife, who is a police sergeant at KwaMbonambi cop shop, were in their house at Phetane Reserve with a colleague who had paid them a visit.

"Information at the police's disposal indicates that two armed suspects barged into the house and robbed the police officers of their service pistols and cellphones before forcing Ntinga and the clerk in a vehicle and driving off. The sergeant was left in the house unharmed," he said.

He said the clerk, who works at Ntambanana Police Station, was found lying along the road with injuries and it is suspected that he was thrown out of a moving car.

"He was taken to hospital where he is receiving medical attention. Warrant Officer Ntinga was found dead at the Umsunduze River bank with multiple gunshot wounds. The vehicle was found abandoned in a sugarcane field, a short distance from where the police officer's body was found," he said.

KZN police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has launched a manhunt for at least two suspects who robbed, kidnapped and killed a police officer.

Netshiunda said that the police are appealing to anyone who might have information on the suspects' whereabouts to contact the nearest police or call CrimeStop on 08600 10111.
