SEVEN men are facing charges of multiple counts of rape, sexual assault and robbery with aggravating circumstances related to the recent Krugersdorp gang-rape incident.
Seven more will appear on Thursday, 11 August, facing the same charges. One suspect is a 15-year-old minor. The seven were among the 64 suspects who appeared in Krugersdorp Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 10 August.
The matter was postponed to 28 September, and all seven applied for legal aid.
National Prosecuting Authority spokeswoman Phindi Mjonondwane said seven more were expected to appear on the same charges.
She said the state had a good case against the 14 men, who were charged with the crime that took place when eight women were raped while shooting a video at an abandoned mine in West Village, Krugersdorp, on 28 July.
But Mjonondwane could not confirm if all 14 were linked to the crime through DNA or the identity parade.
She said they could not rule out the chances of more people being charged.
Outside court, political parties including ActionSA, Patriotic Alliance and the ANC were present, though their numbers were fewer than at the previous appearance.
Members of ActionSA told Daily Sun they were prepared to go to court until the suspects were sentenced.
Ward 128 councillor Themba Mabunda said: “The case is a priority to fight the scourge of gender-based violence and illegal mining.”
