ANOTHER fire incident has hit the City of Joburg, this time in the Berea area.

The Johannesburg Emergency Management Services has confirmed that the fire broke out at the Sands Building on the fourth and fifth floor.

“Firefighters have managed to extinguish the fire. The fire investigating team will be brought in to establish what the cause of the fire incident was,” EMS spokesman Robert Mualudzi said.

He said at the time of the fire, all residents in the building were evacuated to safety and no injuries were reported.

The country has seen a spate of fires in the past few months.

The most recent fire which gained attention was the one from Richards Bay in KZN at NCT Woodchip Mill on 30 September, which raged on for more than three days.

Efforts to kill the flames saw authorities rely on airborne assistance, involving dropping water bombs on stockpiles that have not yet caught fire.

On 6 October, six South African National Defence Force members died when a wildfire raged at the SA Army's Combat Training Centre in the Northern Cape, and the rest were left injured with burns.

In an article published by Daily Sun on 3 October, Prophet Gugu Hadebe said the recent fires were a cry out loud from the ancestors as they felt culture has been neglected.

At the same time, sangoma Aubrey Matshiqi warned of more fires to come and further regarded the current state of the country as a need to abandon the path we are on for a new one.
