RESIDENTS of Zenzele squatter camp in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni are spitting fire after a mum left her six children alone in June 2023.

The 42-year-old woman allegedly left with her new boyfriend, and her kids have no idea where she is.

Her children said she can't even be reached on her cellphone.

Concerned residents said the kids, who are aged between four and 16, sometimes sleep on empty stomachs while she allegedly spends their grant money with her boyfriend.

As a result, the residents want her Sassa grant money to be discontinued.

"The kids are suffering and to continue giving the grant money to her doesn't help her children. Sassa should get a responsible family member or choose one of her children to administer the grant money because the mother is clearly irresponsible," said a resident.

The kids' uncle said he wasn't aware that his sister left her kids alone.

"It was until one of my nephews came to ask for food that I became aware of the situation. My nephew told me that they last saw their mother in June and have not heard from her since. They said she doesn't buy food and yet she has the grant cards with her," he said.

The uncle said he has been told that social workers bring kids food, but it's not enough.

"We want the grant money to be stopped and for police to be involved because she has neglected her children," he said.

The residents said the kids are dirty and hungry, and their shack is untidy. The SunTeam also saw the shack.

Community leader Laly Skosana notified Daily Sun about the kids' terrible situation.

"We appeal to Sassa to consider this matter and stop giving grants to irresponsible mothers who use the money meant for children on themselves," she said.

Nandi Mosia of Sassa in Gauteng asked for the details of the relatives to investigate the matter.

Captain Nelda Sekgobela of Ekurhuleni District police said this was a serious matter and promised to follow it up.
