ON the last day of voter registration, the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) said thousands of South Africans registered and checked their voting status online or by visiting registration stations across the country.

The IEC said more than half a million of South Africans registered on day one of the registration weekend, paving a way for a good start on day two.

The commission reported that day two of the second registration weekend started well by 8am in the morning, with over 99% of voting stations opening with the remainder opening before 8:30am.

It stated that at the close of registration on day one, more than half a million registrations were recorded at their 23 303 voting stations.

“At 1pm today, a total of 564 715 registration transactions had been recorded at voting stations. Yesterday, the commission recorded 67 200 online registration transactions. Today, the figure of online registrations stands at 34 293,” said IEC electoral commissioner, Mosotho Moepya.

He urged voters whose access to their online facility is delayed by high traffic to be patient.

“The commission reminds eligible voters of the general rule in elections. That is, a person votes at a voting station where they are registered.

"The only exception to the general rule is that a voter may vote outside of the voting district of registration upon notification to the commission by a date to be regulated by the election timetable. Details of the modalities of notification will be outlined after the registration process,” said Moepya.

He also added that their online facility and local municipal offices will remain open for registration and verification of details until the date of the elections is proclaimed by the president.
