CHAOS erupted at Sharpeville Memorial after political parties forcefully entered the monument just after President Cyril Ramaphosa did a wreath-laying.

Political leaders from PAC, Build One South Africa (Bosa), ActionSA, Azanian People's Organisation (Azapo) and African Congress for Transformation (ACT), with their members, entered the monument by pushing police officers at the gate to gain access to also lay wreaths.

The group of leaders speaking in one voice said they were united to take out the ANC in power.

They said entering the monument by force signified how they would take Ramaphosa out of office.

On the other hand, the wreath-laying ceremony took place at Phelindaba Cemetery and at the Sharpeville monument to commemorate 64 years of Human Rights Day with the theme Three Decades of Respect for and Promotion of Human Rights.

Emfuleni mayor Sipho Radebe said the wreath-laying ceremony formed part of the provincial government’s programme to commemorate the fateful day which saw 69 people lose their lives and 180 wounded when police fired live ammunition at protesters who were protesting against pass laws in Sharpeville in 1960.

Speaking at the wreath-laying ceremony at the cemetery, former Emfuleni Local Municipality mayor, Reverend Gift Moerane, said the United Nations had declared the graveside an international heritage site.

Moerane said new headstones will be unveiled.

On the other hand, Rise Mzansi party leader Songezo Zibi and party members laid wreaths outside the monument.

Zibi said the name of human rights is hiding the truth of what happened in Sharpeville.

“The day should be commemorated as Sharpeville day so that even the great-grandchildren will understand the date 21 March better, not with this name that hides the truth,” he said.
