A HORRIFIC bus accident outside Musina in Limpopo claimed the lives of 22 people on Sunday afternoon, 17 September.

This after a bus belonging to Hope Diamond Transport and transporting Murray & Roberts Cementation mine workers to Venetia Mine collided head-on with a truck.

Both vehicles then caught on fire.

In a statement, Murray & Roberts Cementation said emergency services' preliminary reports indicated that 18 of the group’s employees, along with the driver of the other vehicle, lost their lives, while four people were seriously injured and rushed to hospital.

"We offer our deepest condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives, those who are injured, and anyone impacted by this tragic accident. Our focus is on providing the necessary support to our employees and their families during this very difficult time,” said the company.

Speaking to Daily Sun on Monday, 18 September, Jackie Mapiloko, spokeswoman of De Beers Group, said the mine is on standby and they are working with Murray & Roberts Cementation to provide support to the bereaved families. 

Limpopo Transport and Community Safety MEC, Florence Radzilani, visited the accident scene on Monday. She was accompanied by Vhembe Mayor Dowelani Nenguda, Musina Mayor Godfrey Mawela and Ntokozo Ngema, senior general manager at Venetia Mine. 

The MEC said the visit was able to establish that 20 people died on the scene, while two died in hospital.
