THE Mount Road police and a member of the K9 unit have been commended for assisting a homeless woman who gave birth under a bridge in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, on Sunday, 14 August.
Warrant officer Werner Maree and a colleague were patrolling in North End when they were flagged down by a person.
“The incoherent person rambled something and pointed towards the bridge. The members rushed towards that direction, expecting to attend to a crime scene. However, when they stopped their vehicle and inquired from another person, the police officers were informed that a woman needed assistance as she was giving birth,” said police spokeswoman Colonel Priscilla Naidu.

She said the members rushed to the corner of Green and Adcock streets where they found the woman covered in a blanket.
“She had already given birth, but the umbilical cord was still attached and wound around the baby’s neck. An ambulance was immediately requested and on hearing the nature of the situation, Constable Shaneez Daniels from the K9 unit rushed to assist,” explained Naidu.
Both the officers managed to carefully cut the cord and the baby boy, who was already turning blue, was rushed into the police vehicle while waiting for medical help.
He was covered in a blanket and kept warm.

“The police official remained calm, and both the officers worked together as they cut the cord. The scene was very cold and dirty, and the mother was obviously anxious and helpless at the same time. She was very grateful that the officers came to her rescue,” Naidu said.
Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner Major General Vuyisile Ncata applauded the excellent efforts of the police members for delivering on their mandate of ensuring the safety of citizens.
“Not very often, our members are faced with situations such as this, but their level of experience and calm always plays a pivotal role in handling any situation. Had they not reacted so swiftly, the situation may not have been as joyous as it now is. Their efforts are truly commendable,” said Ncata.
The newborn was safely taken to hospital by the ambulance and is reported to be in a healthy condition.
