FOR four months this tsotsi terrorised pupils at schools in Benoni, Ekurhuleni.

He would threaten to shoot them and force them to hand over their cellphones, cash and other valuable.

But when he was eventually caught, it was discovered that he had been using a toy gun all along.

Pupils helped the police with information and the suspect was bust on 29 March.

This was after he robbed a 13-year-old pupil after pointing the toy gun at him.

He took the pupil’s cellphone and money.

The suspect has been appearing in the Benoni Magistrates Court since his arrest.

Captain Nomsa Sekele said the suspect’s reign of terror ended when pupils supplied police with information and positively identified him in an identity parade.

“Last week, the court found him guilty on five counts of robbery with aggravated circumstances and one of attempting to defeat the ends of justice,” said Sekele.

The suspect who is in custody is expected to appear in court again for sentencing on 29 July.

Pupils said they were happy that the terror has ended.

“We were not free to walk in the streets because we knew he’d be waiting for us,” said one pupil.
