A FAILED cash-in-transit robbery on the Golden Highway in Sebokeng, Vaal on Monday, 3 October, left nearby houses damaged.

This after the thugs bombed the cash van and also fired many shots.

One of the cash van guards told Daily Sun he thanked God that he managed to escape unharmed.

He said he jumped fences and was chased by dogs while fleeing from the thugs’ bullets.

“We just heard the car being hit by another one, pushing it off the road.

“Our vehicle went off the road and the next thing I heard gunshots. We left the van,” he said.

Resident Thabiso Kunene said he heard a loud noise at about 7pm while watching TV.

“When I went outside to investigate, I heard gunshots followed by explosives going off. Community members came out in numbers and the thugs fled the scene,” he said.

Thabiso said a passing police vehicle tried to disperse the community, but failed and ended up chasing the thugs.

Another resident, Dorah Mokubung (49), said the situation left her and her family terrified. “My grandchild fainted out of fear after the gunshots and explosion,” she said.

She said that her windows and those of eight other houses were broken by the bomb blast. Lieutenant-Colonel Robert Netshiunda said police were searching for the suspects.

“It’s reported that the driver of a cash van and his crew member were driving when their vehicle suddenly came under fire from suspects who were travelling in a white Mercedes-Benz,” he said.

“The cash truck crushed into a ditch.

“Flying Squad members who were in the area responded to the incident and their vehicle was damaged by community members who wanted to help themselves to the cash.”

Netshiunda said no one was injured and no money was stolen. Anyone with information should call CrimeStop on 08600 10111.
