RESIDENTS are still in shock after a man allegedly chopped off the heads of his mum and sister.

It's alleged that he shot and then chopped off their heads at their home in Sigodini, Mid Illovo, Durban, on Wednesday afternoon, 20 December.

The gruesome incident, which has left local residents in shock, allegedly happened in the presence of a 12-year-old relative who managed to escape.

However, the 51-year-old man has been arrested and is expected to appear in court on Friday, 22 December.

A neighbour said that at the moment they are not sure why the man killed his mum and sister in such a brutal way.

"They lived in the house together and no one had any idea that one day he'd do something so painful. I didn't know the man personally, but I've seen him in the area and those who knew him said he wasn't that violent," he said.

Another neighbour told Daily Sun everyone was shocked as something like this wasn't expected.

"It's hard to even talk about it at the moment. Maybe the man was on something, because a sober person would never do something like this," he said.

KZN police spokesman Colonel Robert Netshiunda said cops have arrested a 51-year-old man in connection with the double murder of his mother and sister at their home in Sigodini Mid Illovo on Wednesday afternoon.

He said cops responded to reports of a shooting and on arrival at the scene found the bodies of an 87-year-old woman and her 39-year-old daughter lying in a pool of blood with their heads chopped off.

"During a subsequent search of the yard, the heads of the deceased were found hidden in a pit toilet," he said.

The knife used to cut off the heads was also recovered.

"The suspect was later arrested and found in possession of an illegal firearm, which is believed to be the murder weapon," he said.

Netshiunda said the suspect will appear at the Richmond Magistrates Court on Friday, 22 December 2023.
