ELDORADO Park and Slovo Park residents in the south of Joburg have temporarily closed a section of the Golden Highway due to concerns over a sinkhole that occupies almost an entire lane.
The Department of Roads and Transport spokeswoman, Melitah Madiba told Daily Sun the department is aware of the partial closure of the road due to the collapse of a section of the road. She said traffic control measures are currently being implemented.
Madiba said the department has appointed the civil/structural engineers who are working on the designs and are set to conclude their work next week.
She said upon finalisation of the designs, the department will then allocate work to the appointed panel of contractors to fix the road damage.
“The time frames for fixing the road will be determined by the design report that the department will receive from the engineers next week,” she said.

Ward 122 Councilor Sthembiso Zungu told Daily Sun the department has informed them about the design, which they were told will be concluded next week.
He said the sinkhole has raised concerns among residents, and they assumed that the other side of the road might also be affected in the long run.

JMPD spokesman Superintendent Xolani Fihla told Daily Sun that the R553 Golden Highway in Olifantsvlei is blocked off in both directions between Cavendish Street near Fun Valley and R554 Nirvana Drive, near Lehae.
He said this is following the closure by residents of Ward 122 and Ward 119 on Monday, 9 October 2023, who are protesting over the lack of service delivery for fixing the roadway due to a sinkhole that has developed.
Motorists are advised to avoid that stretch of the roadway and to use R554 Nirvana Drive and Klipspruit Valley Road in Lenasia as alternative routes.
