FAMILIES fear that their loved ones might not be resting in peace.
This is because a sewer has been running through Mobeni cemetery in KZN, since April 2023.
Lethinjabulo Phungula (26) from the Mpola area in Dassenhoek, Durban, said she buried her parents in the cemetery in December 2022.
Lethinjabulo said her parents were shot and both died.
"In April, we decided to go visit their graves at the cemetery. We got a shock of our lives when we arrived to find that a sewer was running on our parents' graves," he said.
Lethinjabulo said this worried them a lot because they didn't expect to see something so terrible.

"The same day we discovered this, I went to the cemetery office to report the matter. They promised to attend to the matter. But when we returned towards the end of April, still nothing had changed but instead the situation had worsened," Lethinjabulo said.
She said when they visited again in May 2023, still nothing had changed.
"More months passed and there was no change. I went as far and speaking to a municipal worker at the sewer department and he promised to fix it, but he didn't," Lethinjabulo said.
She said their last visit was on Sunday, 3 September.
"It is very painful because we still have not got over the loss of our parents, and now this. While nothing has happened to indicate that our parents are not happy, I fear that they are not at peace. Maybe at a later date they will tell us through dreams that they are not recovering well," she said.
The eThekwini Municipality's head of the water and sanitation department, Ednick Msweli, visited the cemetery on Tuesday, 5 September to assess the extent of the damage.
Msweli said the damaged sewer had caused some pollution, affecting about four nearby graves.
"A contractor will have to be appointed to repair the damage to contain the pollution that is currently visible in the area," he said.
Msweli said they are trying to establish the cause of the burst sewer pipe.
