GLEMMY Maputa said she had received the best birthday gift.

On Tuesday, 9 April, Glemmy from Carnival Green in Brakpan, Ekurhuleni was among the recipients of 48 houses at Extension 8 in Helderwyk near Carnival City, Brakpan, Ekurhuleni.

Human Settlements Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi and Gauteng MEC for Human Settlements and Infrastructure Development, Lebogang Maile, handed over houses and title deeds to the beneficiaries.

Gogo Glemmy celebrated her 60th birthday on Sunday, 7 April.

"This is the best day of my life to get such a gift.

"I will live to cherish this moment because my children now have a place to call home," said Glemmy.

Another recipient, Bheki Hlongwane (59) from Holimisa near Boksburg, Ekurhuleni, said he has long waited to be the proud owner of his own house.

Vusimuzi Ngcobo (61), another beneficiary, said his dignity has been restored as a family man.

"I had no place of my own. I lived in the family house in Vosloorus with my children, who had to sleep on the floor because there was no space.

"Now, I'm relieved that at my age I have my own house. I'd like to thank the officials that finally they have fulfilled their promises," said Vusimuzi.

Another beneficiary, Nomsa Zwane, said she feels like she has been given a fresh start in her life because of the allocation into her new home.

"The houses are very beautiful, although they are small. We appreciate them because nothing was as painful as being crowded in a family house with children without privacy," said Nomsa.

Minister Kubayi said: "As we work on this administration, we're going to make sure that in our list where we give beneficiaries, if they're senior citizens, we are going to give them the houses as a priority.

"I was happy today. In this project, we gave houses to women and senior citizens.

"However, today, 9 April, to be able to give a home, a shelter to an orphan was topping I've done. We have fulfilled the obligation of the Freedom Charter - there shall be houses, security, and comfort."
