THE suspects who killed six patrons at a tavern in Daveyton, Ekurhuleni in September 2023 are still roaming the streets as police haven't made an arrest.

This is according to the Gauteng Police Commissioner, Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela, who presented the province's crime stats for the second quarter on Thursday, 23 November, in Braamfontein.

Mawela said this was a serious concern to the police.

"We may remember the Daveyton incident where six people were killed while one person was injured. It was reported that the victims were sitting outside a tavern when a group of unknown suspects approached and opened fire on them. Earlier the same day, four people were shot and killed at a Daveyton railway line next to Gabon informal settlement. The motive remains unknown," he said.

Mawela said the province lost eight members during this period - three were killed while off-duty, and five were killed while on-duty.

"Police safety, as well as ensuring that members are operational ready for combat, remains a priority for the police management in Gauteng," he said.

He said he was concerned about the phenomenon of multiple murders, blaming the abuse of liquor as the main root cause for these killings.

Mawela said in the second quarter there were 82 dockets registered with 191 victims.

According to police stats, 1 625 people were killed in the last quarter, an increase of 26 deaths compared to last year between July and September.

Mawela said rape cases have decreased by 167 to 2 096. Gauteng remains the biggest contributor to crime in the country, with 27%.
