RESIDENTS of Motla and Moeka in Moretele, North West said the sewage spilling next to their yards poses a health risk to the community.
According to residents, the problem dates years back and even the previous administration failed to resolve it.
They said it was time the Moretele Municipality addressed this challenge for good.
Kids in the area no longer play outside as many get sick. Speaking to Daily Sun, resident Merriam Malatsi said they inhale the bad smell daily and suspect the stench is the reason they constantly have stomach problems.
“We’re getting sick all the time and our lives are in danger.
“Something must be done, otherwise we will die from diseases we don’t even know,” she said.
Resident Patrick Mabiletsa said: “We don’t enjoy eating anymore because of the smell and those who live closer to the sewer suffer the most. We are dealing with the coronavirus at the moment and this has just added another health problem.”
EFF leader in Moretele, Cordelia Shai, said the problem has been there for many years.
“This is a big worry for the community. We recently saw the sewer spillage and the situation is very bad, but we are determined to fight for the community.”
She said they’ll write to the speaker so that this matter could be addressed.
Moretele Mayor George Manyike said they received a complaint about the issue and they’ll assess the situation.
“We have asked for a meeting with Magalies Water as they’re the ones who are responsible for servicing the pipes. We hope we will know how much money is needed to solve this issue after their assessment,” said Manyike.
