FLOWING sewage has been blamed for a collapsed bridge.
When the bridge on Welcome Road in Khayelitsha collapsed in December, residents blamed it on poor workmanship. But the City of Cape Town has said the disaster was caused by flowing kak water.
After an assessment was conducted on 7 February, urban mobility MMC Rob Quintas said: “A portion of the embankment slope was eroded by a sewage spill caused by a blockage in the overloaded sewer system.”
Residents told the SunTeam they were shocked because the bridge was completed just before Christmas.
Mbulelo Ntangana (44) said: “I was shocked when I passed by the place at the end of January and saw some cracks on the bridge.
“How can that be possible when it was officially opened recently?”
DA PR councillor Thulani Dasa said the situation was dangerous because at first, there was no indication the bridge was damaged.
“Motorists and pedestrians didn’t know there was danger. Thank God the place was cordoned off,” he said.
MMC Quintas said plans were being made to repair the bridge.
