WHEN he left rehab, Sizwe Sekgopu vowed never to return to his life of drugs.
The 37-year-old from Kagiso, Mogale City, started a business braaing meat on a mobile stand and established a big customer base. Today, he is no longer moving from street to street but has his own butchery which employs seven people.
He sells meat to cook at home and has a braai area for customers to eat and have drinks.
Sizwe started selling chicken feet in 2009 but things became difficult after he got R3 million funding from an SMME investment company, which trains youth to start businesses, in 2013. He said stress drove him to drugs.
Sizwe said he was overwhelmed with so much cash and the investors didn’t understand kasi businesses.
“They changed my initial idea and made me sell things, which didn’t have a market ekasi,” he said.
“My ideas did not matter any more and this drove me to drugs until I landed in rehab,” he said.
Sizwe said after he lost his investors, he decided to run his business his way.
“I’m glad that I’m running my business the best way I know,” he said.
