PHIWAYINKOSI Ntshangase jetted off to Austria to represent Mzansi in the World Skills Competition.

The talented 23-year-old from Nongoma, northern KZN, will be competing against young people from 23 countries in the electrical installation category.

His passion and talent for installing electricity in any moving object is what made him to be selected to represent Mzansi against the world.

His journey in the competition started in 2021 when Mthashana TVET College selected him to represent them in the provincial competition.

He is currently doing N6 Electrical Engineering at the college.

Phiwayinkosi beat all his competitors and then moved to the national level in August this year, where he beat everyone as well.

That’s when he was selected to represent the country.

His unique skill to install electricity in a car is what has set him apart from all other competitors.

Phiwayinkosi left the country on Saturday, 19 November, and the world competition kicked off today, 21 November.

The competition will run for three days and Phiwayinkosi is confident that he will reach the finals.

“If you do what you love, you become very creative and you always have room for improvement and growth.

“I have confidence in what I do. I believe I will make my college, my parents and the nation happy,” said Phiwayinkosi.

He said that even if he doesn’t win, he is glad that his country has finally got a chance to be represented in serious competitions.

“For me, this is not just a competition but also a chance to learn about how other countries are doing in the engineering field.

“It is a learning curve. I hope I will go back home having more ideas on how we can develop our engineering field,” said Phiwayinkosi.

Speaking during Phiwayinkosi’s send-off ceremony hosted by the Nongoma Local Municipality on Friday, 18 November, Mayor Albert Mncwango said they are pleased to have someone coming from a deep rural area representing Mzansi.

Mncwango said: “This boy is a good example to our youth that regardless of where you come from, you must follow your dreams I believe that skills like these should be considered to solve issues such as load shedding.”
