FREE State Premier Mxolisi Dukwana has asked the Special Investigating Unit to launch an intensive investigation into the Matjhabeng Municipality.
This is concerning the fruitless and alleged wasteful expenditure of R1 billion on white elephant projects.
Some of the projects were started nine years ago, with various construction companies being fully paid for non-existent projects. The municipality has two big water and sewage projects that were planned to accelerate service delivery, but they both remain unfinished.

Dukwana alleged that a lot of money has been spent wrongfully in those projects and it has negatively affected service delivery.
"We want to know who paid those companies while they didn't deliver as per initial agreement. Government does pay in advance. We believe this is corruption. Those who are responsible should account. We have learnt that R26 million was paid to one of the companies which did absolutely nothing,” he said.
Dukwana said the government won't allow taxpayers' money to be used without proper accountability. He agreed that the province has many unfinished projects, whose monies were paid to contractors.
