JUST when Mzansi is trying to move on from the Enyobeni Tavern incident that happened two weeks ago, more people have lost their lives in another tavern tragedy in KZN.
Four people died while eight others were rushed to hospital for medical attention after a shooting at a tavern in Pietermaritzburg on Saturday night, 9 July.
Two people died at the scene and the other two died in hospital.
It is alleged that the patrons were having fun when two armed men stormed into the tavern and started shooting, without saying anything.
According to KZN police spokeswoman Lieutenant- Colonel Nqobile Gwala, a group of people were having drinks at a tavern in Sweetwaters, Pietermaritzburg, at about 8.30pm when a vehicle arrived and parked outside the tavern. She said two men jumped out of the vehicle, entered the tavern and fired random shots at the patrons.
“A total of 12 people were shot. Two people were declared dead on the scene and the other two died in hospital,” she said.
The deceased are aged between 30 and 45.Gwala said that eight people are still in hospital after they sustained injuries. She said the suspects fled the scene after the incident.
“Charges of murder and attempted murder were opened for investigation at Plessislaer SAPS. The docket has been transferred to the Provincial Organised Crime Unit, who will take over the investigation,” said Gwala.
