A MASTAND (57) from Daveyton in Ekurhuleni has been arrested for allegedly assaulting her tenant.

Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) spokeswoman Lieutenant-Colonel Kelebogile Thepa said the incident happened on Friday, 3 May.

She said the tenant (51) claims she was coming back home from the shop when she tried to open the main gate.

"She noticed that it was locked, and it was not the first time she was locked outside by her mastand.

"The complainant previously raised her concerns to the suspect on several occasions, but they fell on deaf ears," said Thepa.

Thepa said the tenant resorted to using the neighbour's gate to access the property.

The situation escalated when she approached the suspect's room and knocked on the door, only to be met with darkness as the lights were turned off.

"The suspect came out carrying an iron rod and a butter knife. The mastand didn't talk to her tenant and started hitting her several times with the iron rod on her left hand. The suspect scratched the complainant with the butter knife on her chest before a concerned neighbour intervened and separated the two," Thepa added.

She said the mastand was arrested for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH).
