FORMER speaker of the Western Cape legislature Masizole Mnqasela, who was a close friend to the murdered activist, Loyiso Nkohla-Mabandla, said those who betrayed and killed him must rot in jail.

This happened after it was revealed that those who killed Loyiso were people close to him.

Mnqasela, who attended the court case on Monday, 20 November, said the more people get arrested, the more names of people close to Loyiso are reviewed.

“It saddens me that the more we get closer the names are being revealed. I wonder who else is close to Loyiso who should also be inside there behind bars. It's clear that this murder was planned. You know that story of Judas Iscariot in the Bible, that those who are close to you are the ones who are planning your downfall,” said Mnqasela

He said the murder of Loyiso robbed not only his family, but all the poor people from around Cape Town.

Mnqasela said the courts must not show mercy to the alleged killers.

“They deserve to rot in jail. These are dangerous animals that deserve to rot in the darkest of cells."

Mnqasela, a former DA member and speaker at the provincial legislature, was expelled from the party in 2022.

In July, he formed his party, the Alliance of Citizens for Change (ACC).

Mnqasela said Mzansi must take tough laws to deal with gun violence. “Even where we are here on Cape Flats in Athlone, Mitchells Plain, Hanover Park, Khayelitsha, Gugulethu and in Philippi where Loyiso died. It is easy to take a life, and it tells us that we need tougher laws to deal with gun violence,” said Mnqasela.

He also said the law regarding bail must be re-evaluated.

Mnqasela said those who murder others do not deserve to be walking on the streets.

“Parliament must be clear that if you take a life, you don’t deserve bail. But there must be a law that is put in place in Parliament. We also need to investigate whether it is not the right time now to talk about the death sentence. We need to look at measures to ensure that we don’t have many Loyisos."
