FORMER security guard Douglas Mnisi (38) is lucky to be alive.

He escaped death and now uses a urine bag and is struggling.

This happened after a brutal attack by tsotsis in August 2022.

Douglas is claiming R3 million in compensation from the Mpumalanga Department of Education. He claims that the department only paid him R3 000 and fired him.

The father of five claims that he was conducting a routine night patrol at ML Nkuna High School in Mkhuhlu, near Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga, when the incident happened.

"I was caught up by a gang of four tsotsis who were armed with guns. They beat me to a pulp and left me lying in a pool of blood at about 10pm in August 2022. The heavily armed gang emerged from the darkness. They ordered me to open the administration block and the computer lab," he said.

He said things turned ugly when he told the alleged tsotsis that he didn't have the keys with him.

"They started beating me with gun butts and boards. They beat me until I fainted. If the school lunch members had not discovered me lying on the ground and taken me to the hospital, I would have died," he said.

He said he had to spend several weeks in hospital and doctors confirmed that part of his ribs were broken, as well as his bladder, legs and back. He said he had no money for taxi fares for regular check-ups.

Douglas claimed that the same department only paid him R3 000 in compensation after the ordeal before sending him home for good and not even bothering to visit him.

"Life is difficult for me. I struggle to find money for a taxi to go for regular check-ups. On the other hand, I have to make sure my children don't go to bed hungry. I've tried to find a job, but companies are turning me down because of my serious condition. If they paid me R3 million in compensation, I could at least balance my life with my children," Douglas said.

Jasper Zwane, spokesman for the Mpumalanga Department of Education, said: "The department has instructed the district office to submit a detailed report on the matter. Once the report is available, the department will be in a position to comment on the matter."
