NINE years ago, on this day, South Africans were left saddened, shocked and heartbroken after the news of the untimely death of the beloved soccer star broke.

The Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates goalkeeper, Senzo Meyiwa, was gunned down after having supper at the home of his then girlfriend singer and baby mama Kelly Khumalo in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni on 26 October 2014.

Meyiwa was shot during an alleged botched robbery in the presence of his two childhood friends, Kelly's mother, sister and her two children, one she shared with the deceased, and Chicco Twala’s son.

The witnesses claimed that two unknown intruders stormed into the house at 8pm, demanding money and cellphones.

They added that one of the intruders, who might have shot Senzo, had dreadlocks, while the other one, who was in a scuffle with him, was wearing a hoodie.

Five men have since been arrested for the crime and are standing trial.

On Thursday morning, 26 October, a group of people from a civil organisation called SA Mass Movement picketed outside the North Gauteng High Court, demanding justice for the slain goalkeeper.

Mzuvele Cele said they wanted to remind the court and the public that this was the day Senzo lost his fundamental right to live.

“We're here to remind everyone. We're not here because some criminal was assaulted. We're not here because we feel it’s nice to be here. This is the day Senzo lost his life, and we feel we're not closer to getting justice," he said.

Mzuvele said they want people who were in the house on that fateful night to account for what happened.

“We need all of them to come and tell their version of the story, then we will know who is telling the truth or not,” he said.

Meanwhile, in court, state witness Lieutenant-Colonel Moholo Solomon Raphadu is expected to testify on the confession statement allegedly made by accused two Bongani Ntanzi at Moroka Police Station in Soweto.
