FLOODS have hit KZN once again, with rain pouring non-stop since Saturday, 21 May.

Much of the province has experienced flooding and residents have been warned to avoid affected areas.

Msawakhe Mayisela, eThekwini municipal spokesman, said the South African Weather Service had increased the weather warning level to 10, which is the highest.

Speaking on Saturday afternoon, he said the rain was only expected to become lighter on Sunday, 22 May.

“It is expected that water levels on the roads and rivers will increase,” he said.

Mayisela said motorists were warned not to use the M7 due to mudslides and moving water across the roadway.

He also urged residents to avoid uMngeni Road as it was filled with water.

“Tara Road and Quality Street in the South Durban Basin are flooded. Bridges over Mountbatten and Varsity Drive on the M19 are flooding.

“Avoid Florence Masing Road behind Unisa,” he said.

“Avoid the N3 towards the CBD as there is a lot of water.”

Mayisela said residents were urged to avoid crossing low-lying bridges, streams and rivers.

“Do not drive over a low-water bridge if water is flowing strongly and the ground is not visible. Evacuate flooded areas immediately,” he said.
