A MAN was shot dead in his home in UMthambeka, Thembisa, and his 11-year-old son hospitalised.

The duo was allegedly shot by unknown gunmen during a house robbery. Two unknown gunmen broke into the house and demanded cash and valuables.

When the family went to bed on Wednesday morning, 3 April, they had no idea of the horror waiting for them in the early hours of the morning.

According to reports, two unknown gunmen allegedly broke open a locked burglar door, fortced their way in, shot and injured the 11-year-old boy, who screamed when he saw them.

They then pointed a gun at the deceased father (34), as he tried to go to his little boy, who is fighting for his life at a local hospital.

The suspects allegedly told the family they knew where the money was hidden in the house.

"We told them we don't have any money, then they turned on me," the wife said.

Fearing for her life, she went and got the money they had kept for someone. But they wanted more and were offered a phone and a TV, which they took with the R3 200 in cash.

As they left the house, the deceased tried to close the door and was hit by two gunshots. He was killed instantly.

"Maybe they thought he was trying to fight back. My husband was a wonderful person, I never saw him angry or resentful in all those years," she said.

Members of the community believe someone known to the couple may have information about the suspects.

"How else would they know there was money in the house? I hope for justice for what happened to my husband and son," they said.

Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo said police are investigating the matter, the suspects are still at large.

"Police have opened a case of murder and attempted murder," Masondo said.
