A MAN wearing a cop’s bulletproof vest and carrying a toy gun has been robbing people.

Now Nyanga cops have bust a 27-year-old suspect from Philippi who is suspected of being the culprit.

At the time of his arrest at Ramaphosa squatter camp on Monday, 15 August, cops who were on patrol recovered stolen goods in his possession.

Residents said the cops were informed by a resident who saw the man robbing people.

A woman who sells meat along Govan Mbeki Road told the SunTeam that even motorists were being terrorised.

“I thank God he was arrested because he was putting the police uniform into disrepute. At first, I thought he was a cop. I was shocked when other cops pressed him to the ground and arrested him,” she said.

Police spokesman Captain Frederick van Wyk confirmed that when the suspect was arrested, cops recovered a bulletproof vest.

“A 27-year-old man was arrested on charges of possession of stolen state property and possession of an imitation firearm in Ramaphosa informal settlement. It happened when SAPS members were on foot patrols in the area,” he said.
