ELIZABETH Ndala wants her neighbours to fix her house.

The 80-year-old from Soshanguve, Tshwane, was left homeless in June after her house was burnt down, allegedly by her neighbour’s daughter.

Gogo Elizabeth has been staying with her sister, Basetsana Ndala.

She said the neighbour’s daughter had a fight with her granddaughter Fortunate at a local tavern. The gogo said she had gone to visit her sister in Mamelodi East when she got a call from other neighbours telling her the house was on fire. Gogo Elizabeth said Fortunate told her the neighbour’s daughter set the house on fire.

“She told me they had a fight at the tavern and then the girl came to my house and burnt it to spite Fortunate,” she said.

She said the girl was bust and ordered to pay for the damage.

“I don’t even know where I will start. Nyaope addicts stole the window frames, electrical cables and furniture. The girl hasn’t paid me anything.”

But neighbour Thabile Vilakazi (43) said her niece did not burn the house down. She said she was aware of the fight because the girl came home bleeding, saying Fortunate had stabbed her.

“The police held her for two days and released her without charges. We don’t know of any order made that she had to pay for the damage,” she said.

Gauteng police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mavela Masondo said a case of malicious damage to property was opened at Soshanguve Police Station.

“The matter was investigated, and the docket was taken to court. The matter was not enrolled by the National Prosecution Authority. Instead, the investigating officer was instructed to conduct further investigation.”
