THE City of Cape Town has warned residents about fong kong technicians who are lying to residents that they work for the municipality.

This after fong kong technicians went to a resident’s house, lied that they are there to access his electricity, but ended up stealing from the house.

Energy MMC Beverly van Reenen said: “This week, we were alerted to an incident in Kenilworth where scammers convinced a resident that they needed to check plugs, lights and the electricity meter as part of a city rates rebate application.

"Once the scammers gained access to the resident’s home, they stole personal items. The city will provide assistance to the police investigation."

The MMC has urged the public to be alert as the scammers are still on the loose. She said when technicians who are contracted by the municipality visit residents, they produce a reference number of the issue they intent to fix and identity cards issued to them by City of Cape Town.

“If you are unsure about any city official visiting your home, please don't hesitate to contact the city’s Call Centre to verify. Residents can call the city’s Call Centre on 0860 103 089 to confirm whether work is being carried out in their area and to verify the reference number prior to giving them access to your property,” said Van Reenen.

Van Reenen also warned residents that plugs, light bulbs and electricity meters need not be checked when residents are applying for a rates rebate.
