THE ANC is set to extend the nomination deadline.
This comes after technical challenges and other problems derailed branch general meetings to nominate candidates for top leadership positions.
In a memo sent out to secretaries of all party structures over the weekend, the NEC said among the challenges faced by branches were load shedding, industrial action and systems issues.
What could further derail the process is that the NEC has ordered the rerun of branch meetings where 51% of members voted, instead of the 70% required by guidelines.
The NEC said this was condoned in contravention of the ANC constitution.
The memo urged regional executive committees and provincial executive committees to put in place a mobilisation programme to ensure that branches were able to convene in line with guidelines.
While it is not clear how many branches will have to have reruns, electoral committee member Chief Matsila told Daily Sun it didn’t seem to be a massive number.
“I don’t think it’s a big number of branches because most of the branches got the quorum,” he said.

It’s understood that the extension is expected to be until 7 November to give branches more time to nominate their preferred leaders.
Daily Sun understands that 60% of branches nationally have successfully held meetings, which is a huge improvement from just a week ago when only 700 of almost 4 000 had sat. The national conference requires 70% of branches to participate.
