ESKOM'S recent performance of a streak of no power cuts has brought hope.

Over the past three weeks, Mzansi has seen no load shedding being implemented as a result of the deliberate plans by the power utility to deal with load shedding.

This is according to Electricity Minister Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, who was briefing the media on the implementation of the Energy Action Plan in Tshwane on Monday, 22 April.

This stretch without power cuts is one of the longest in Mzansi's recent history, with the last similar occurrence being in April 2022.

Ramokgopa commended Eskom's efforts in addressing the load shedding crisis, highlighting significant improvements resulting from the Generation Operational Recovery Plan and the Energy Action Plan.

“The kind of progress that we're seeing today is largely as a result of the exceptional work that has been done by the team at Eskom. We're turning the corner and making significant strides to ensure that finally we get to see the back of load shedding. Of course, we're not yet out of the woods,” he said.

Despite these advancements, Ramokgopa emphasised that challenges remain, and the country is not entirely free from load shedding risks.

“We're keeping focus on the bouncing ball, the resolution of load shedding. I must emphasise that in the nature of this space, you're likely to have setbacks. We're still working on the reliability of these machines and that’s why you can’t speak with great confidence that load shedding is behind us,” said the minister.

Looking ahead, Ramokgopa stressed the importance of renewable energy, advocating for rooftop solar solutions for households and industries.

He said even when load shedding is no longer a concern, promoting solar power can reduce reliance on fossil fuels and support the country's commitment to a green transition.
