EMFULENI Municipality allegedly owes Rand Water R700 million in unpaid water and sanitation services.
Rand Water CEO Sipho Mosai said even though the utility had attached the municipality’s account, they found nothing in the municipal account.
On Monday, 9 October, Emfuleni members of the mayoral committee and councillors Tumi Mochawe and Ndade Mokoena accompanied angry residents to Rand Water head offices in Joburg to get answers regarding their water challenges.
MMC for Public Works Mochawe told Daily Sun that his office had fixed the infrastructure problems so that residents could get water. Still, another problem is now the water pressure from Rand Water reservoirs.

Mochawe said in some areas, people have more than five to 10 years without getting water as the water pressure is very low and the water is unable to get to their taps. Now it’s allegedly getting worse as many townships are facing the same challenge.
Mosai, speaking to angry residents at the Rand Water head offices, said they've created a task team made up of Emfuleni, Metsi a Lekwa and the Rand Water to work hand in hand in fixing the water pressure problem in Emfuleni townships.
“We've introduced something called ‘Special Purpose Vehicle’, and the purpose of this SPV is to resolve non-revenue challenges and issues of water licks so that the municipality is able to sell water to its constituencies. The council has taken the resolution to partner with Rand Water on the SPV initiative so that they both have to find investors to help in fixing the water licks and replacing the damaged valves in and around Emfuleni,” Mosai said.
