THE Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) is being personal with former president Jacob Zuma.
This is according to Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) president Julius Malema.
On Friday, 19 April, in Sandton, Joburg, Malema said the decision to appeal the judgment that allows the uMkhonto Wesizwe party leader to be on the ballot paper was silly.
He said there was no reason to appeal against the Electoral Court judgment.
"We don’t see why the IEC is appealing against the Zuma judgment. It's really very, very personal and by doing so they are keeping President Zuma in the news. This is how they get President Zuma to hold rallies before every court appearance. So, the court appearances are being organised by the IEC,” he said.
Zuma, who is the face of the MK party’s election campaign, had been excluded from the list because there was an objection against him.
Malema said: "We might think that the IEC is taking action against Zuma only to realise that (IEC commissioner Glen) Mashinini is behind the IEC's strategy to keep Zuma in the news. So, you must not sleep.
“I mean, for the first time we saw Advocate Tembeka Ngcukaitobi struggling. I went to him and said, ‘I was busy interviewing judges here, but the observers on social media are not giving it to you this time'. ' He told me openly that, 'we lost that one' because he knows there is no case.”
He questioned the commission’s intention to appeal if it knew there was no case.
Malema said the commission was supposed to be perfect because it had been in the game for 30 years and had gained the necessary experience.
