THE ANC in Ekurhuleni region has condemned the setting alight of Ward 82 Councillor, Desmond Buitendacht's car.

The councillor's car was set alight on Thursday evening, 1 February in Mkhancwa near Brakpan, Ekurhuleni. He escaped unharmed.

"The ANC is fully behind the ward councillor and will spare no effort to provide the necessary support to him," said Ekurhuleni ANC Regional Task Team co-ordinator, Jongizizwe Dlabathi.

Dlabathi said they condemn the attack on the councillor.

"We wish to put it on record that the attempts to stop the voter registration on 3 and 4 February from taking place at Mkhancwa voting district puts the community at the disadvantage of not participating in a democratic process.

"It must be further noted that the service delivery challenges raised by the community are receiving the necessary attention, equally so, some of the service delivery challenges raised require council approval and may not be implementable immediately," said Dlabathi.

He called for calm and pleaded with the community of Mkhancwa to allow the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) to continue with the weekend voter registration without any hindrance.

"If not, this will infringe on the rights of the citizens of that community who wish to use this last voter registration to register to vote," he said.

Meanwhile, Deputy President Paul Mashatile will visit several voting districts in Gauteng, including his voting district in Kelvin, Joburg  on Saturday 3, February and on Sunday 4 February to urge all eligible voters to register to vote or confirm their registration.

The IEC has indicated its readiness to welcome eligible South Africans at 23 303 registration stations across the country to register or check their details ahead of the elections.
