AS Police Minister Bheki Cele was meeting izinduna from Soweto hostels on Saturday, 13 April, police in Ekurhuleni had already taken a step further.
On Friday, 12 April, Actonville SAPS Crime Prevention Wardens and Gorilla private securities conducted a foot patrol operation at Actonville hostel in Ekurhuleni.
Ekurhuleni district police spokeswoman Captain Nelda Sekgobela said while they were busy patrolling inside the hostel, they received a tip-off about a man carrying a firearm in a certain room.
"Members proceeded to the given address and found a man inside the room and asked permission to search, and it was granted," she said.
Sekgobela said upon searching, five unlicenced firearms were recovered, with nine magazines, 65 live ammunition and two holsters.
"The suspect failed to produce the firearms licences when asked. Firearms were checked, and investigations revealed that they were reported stolen from other police stations, and it was also found that the owners of some of the guns had died," said Sekgobela.

A suspect believed to be a hitman was arrested and taken to Actonville Police Station.
Sekgobela said the suspect will appear in court this week.
Meanwhile, Cele met izinduna from 16 hostels in Soweto following the high crime rate at hostels.
The imbizo, held at the University of Joburg (UJ) in Soweto, was to speak about ways to fight crime and hostels harbouring izinkabi.
During his speech, Cele highlighted that KZN produced more hitmen in the country.
He said this was a worrying factor.
