EFF MP Naledi Chirwa reprimanded for attending to her sick kid.

EFF MP Naledi Chirwa had to choose between her sick child and organisational work.

Chirwa chose to attend to her child and for that she has been reprimanded.

The EFF found her guilty of failing to attend the budget speech on 21 February and fined her gazebos.

On top of that, she was ordered to publicise her letter of apology.

Chirwa said she was regretful for failing to attend parliament.

“My four-month-old daughter was sick and so I went home,” she said in her apology that she posted on X.

She said her daughter was now living with her gogo until post-elections to allow her the opportunity to be completely engage in organisational work during the elections period and to form part of the collective that will usher an EFF government after the election on 29 May.

She claimed that she reported her absence to the party but not the designated whip in their caucus in parliament.

Chirwa attended the portfolio committee on higher education on the virtual platform earlier on the same day and contributed to the business of the day.

“Unfortunately for the budget speech, there was no hybrid facility that could allow me to be present online (only physical attendance for the budget speech) thus my inability to be present,” she said.

Chirwa stressed that her action had no bearing on her commitment and dedication to the EFF and Mzansi as a whole.

“I do not doubt my commitment to the movement of the people and the responsibility we have been entrusted with in parliament of South Africa. This is the primary reason I went on maternity leave a day before I gave birth and returned two prior to the lapse of my maternity leave,” she said.

“I will duly fulfil the reprimand set by the organisation for my absence on the day to purchase two gazebos before the 28th of March, and second to that, to publicise this apology as I have done.”

Daily Sun has reached out to EFF spokesman for comment, but he has not responded.

People on X lambasted the EFF for practising “misogynistic culture” for not allowing her to be with her sick child while others agreed with the party’s decision.

@kaysexwale replied: "Reading this made me sad that as a young woman you are made to explain yourself publicly in this manner. The misogynistic culture that denies you the basic dignity of finding your balance of motherhood and leadership should alarm us all.”

BANDILE “CHIZ” ZULU @ka_madesi said: “She’s a public representative, being absent from her public duties requires her to account publicly, it has absolutely nothing to do with gender. You guys have gotten used to ANC mediocre that accountability makes you “sad”.”

Sphe Oyama @sphe_oy said: “Women aren't special than men, sorry. You need to pick equality or superiority not both. Tsek”
