ECONOMIC Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema has condemned the City of Cape Town for its failure to remove rubbish because of gangsters who demand protection fees from them.
Malema was addressing his party’s final manifesto launch in Gugulethu, Cape Town on Sunday 24 March 2024.
Juju, as he's called by his followers, said there was a need for a complete overhaul of cops to address gangsterism and extortion.
“The first thing is that we need to remove the station commissioners because they are working with these gangsters who are extorting people's money.
“There must be a complete overhaul of the police force in the Western Cape. If needs be, we go take Mthatha police and bring them here, go fetch the Venda ones and take these and send them outside because they are embedded in these criminal activities happening in this province.

“Once we get the police force right then you know that police are not in bed with criminals. Then police must deal decisively with dangerous criminals. A criminal who points a firearm at the police or citizen while being called to order by law enforcement, that person is not co-operating.
“They must shoot to kill. They must not massage a criminal who has become dangerous. Now it is the law enforcement that are now living in fear of criminals. Criminals are not scared of law enforcement because a lot of powers have been taken away from them,” said Malema.
The EFF leader also condemned the failure of the City of Cape Town to remove rubbish due to their workers being threatened by protection fee gangs.
On 10 March 2024, the city announced it's garbage removal team was threatened by extortionists in Atlantis area. Late last year, in Gugulethu, Samora Machel and Lower Crossroads, the municipality was forced to suspend rubbish removal after their workers were threatened.
