“We are humans just like everyone and we feel pain but some families don't support those living with disabilities," she said.
Nomasomi said some cases of sexual abuse against people living with disabilities are swept under the carpet.
“Some families are not reporting such cases and it is sad that they don’t want to open cases, stating that the perpetrators are breadwinners," said Nomasomi.
Zamokuhle Sibiya (47) of One in Nine Campaign said some people living with disabilities are facing financial difficulties, adding that 80% of the them don’t even have access to their disability grants.
“Some family members who are looking after them collect their disability grants every month but the beneficiaries don't get the money because the family members use the money for their own benefit," she said.
