THE Democratic Alliance (DA) held a crime awareness rally.
It was held outside the Soshanguve Police Station in Tshwane on Saturday, 27 January.
Soshanguve has been affected by the high crime rate recently, including the mass shooting earlier in January 2024.
The party has described Soshanguve as a paradise for gangsters.
DA leader John Steenhuisen said that Mzansi under the DA government will ensure that every police station in Gauteng becomes a hotspot for gender-based violence and will combat GBV.
"I want to promise all women and young women that under the DA government, if you go to a police station to report GBV, you will not be sent home until the matter is resolved," said Steenhuisen.
He said they will train people on how to properly deal with GBV and use DA technology to prosecute criminals.
"This government doesn't care because their families are safe. They have VIP protection services. Therefore, they don't care about crime because their children and families are safe and protected 24 hours a day. We are paying for the safety of their families," he said.
"This government doesn't care. We will do away with cadre deployment. Instead of taking money and buying decent vehicles for the police, we will make sure there are offices and bulletproof vests. The government has taken your money and brought crime fighters," he said.
He said that they had made the streets more dangerous rather than safer.
Steenhuisen said they have been fighting Police Minister Bheki Cele for many years for obstructing the DA in the places they rule.
Solly Msimanga, DA Gauteng leader and candidate for premier, said South Africans are now living in a nightmare that people could not have dreamed of in 1994.
"Soshanguve has turned into a gangsters' paradise," he said.
The DA mayor of Tshwane, Cilliers Brink, said the most important change was the appointment of a top-class professional police chief.
"I realise that the Tshwane Metro police are not yet in perfect shape. The SAPS is mandated to investigate crime, especially murder. The TMPD can do traffic policing, bylaws, and preventive policing," he said.
Msimanga also led the DA leadership on a visit to the victims of crime in Soshanguve.
